LED Lights for Every Room: How to Choose Watts, Brightness and Colour

Lighting changes how a home feels. The same room can look warm and cosy, or bright and fresh, depending on the lights you choose. Good lighting also makes everyday tasks easier: cooking, reading, studying and getting ready in the morning. LED lights have made lighting cheaper to run and longer lasting. But shopping for them introduces new terms: watts, lumens, colour temperature, CRI. This guide explains each one simply and gives you a practical room-by-room plan.

Watts vs Lumens: What Really Matters

In the days of old incandescent bulbs, we judged brightness by watts. A 100 watt bulb was brighter than a 60 watt bulb. With LEDs, watts only tell you how much electricity the light uses, not how bright it is. Brightness is measured in lumens.

Old incandescent bulbApproximate LED brightnessTypical LED wattage
40 WAbout 450 lumens5 to 6 W
60 WAbout 800 lumens8 to 10 W
75 WAbout 1100 lumens11 to 13 W
100 WAbout 1600 lumens14 to 18 W

When comparing LED lights, look at lumens for brightness and watts for power use. More lumens per watt means a more efficient light.

ColourKelvin rangeFeelBest for
Warm white2700 to 3000 KYellowish, cosy, relaxingBedrooms, living rooms, dining
Neutral white3500 to 4500 KBalanced, naturalLiving rooms, study, dressing
Cool white / daylight5700 to 6500 KBright, crisp, bluishKitchens, bathrooms, work areas

Many homes in India use cool white everywhere, but mixing warm and cool lights by room creates a much more comfortable home.

Colour Rendering (CRI)

CRI tells you how naturally a light shows colours, on a scale up to 100. A CRI of 80 or above is good for homes. For dressing areas, art or makeup, a higher CRI helps colours look true.

Room-by-Room Lighting Guide

A simple way to plan is to think in three layers:

  • General lighting to light the whole room
  • Task lighting for specific jobs like cooking or reading
  • Accent lighting for mood and decoration

Living Room

  • General: LED panel lights or downlights, neutral or warm white
  • Accent: Cove lights, wall lights or a statement fixture
  • Tip: Use dimmable lights or separate switches so you can change the mood for movie nights or guests

Bedroom

  • General: Warm white downlight or panel
  • Task: Bedside reading lights
  • Tip: Avoid very bright cool white lights before sleep; warm light is more relaxing

Kitchen

  • General: Bright cool or neutral white panel or batten
  • Task: Under-cabinet strip lights over the counter so you are not cooking in your own shadow
  • Tip: The kitchen needs more brightness than any other room

Bathroom

  • General: Moisture-resistant downlight or batten
  • Task: Light near the mirror for grooming
  • Tip: Choose fittings suitable for damp areas

Study or Home Office

  • General: Neutral white panel
  • Task: Desk lamp with good brightness
  • Tip: Avoid glare on screens by placing lights to the side

Dining Area

  • General or accent: Warm white pendant light over the table
  • Tip: Hang pendants low enough to light the table without blocking the view

Balcony and Entrance

  • General: Weather-resistant wall light or bulkhead
  • Tip: A warm light at the entrance feels welcoming
RoomApproximate brightness needed
Bedroom10 to 20 lumens per sq ft
Living room10 to 20 lumens per sq ft
Kitchen30 to 40 lumens per sq ft
Bathroom20 to 30 lumens per sq ft
Study30 to 50 lumens per sq ft at the desk

Example: A 12 ft x 12 ft bedroom is 144 sq ft. At about 15 lumens per sq ft, it needs around 2,200 lumens in total, which might be two or three downlights plus a bedside lamp.

Popular Types of LED Lights

  • LED bulbs: Replace old bulbs directly in existing holders
  • LED battens: Modern replacement for tube lights
  • Panel lights: Flat, sleek lights for false ceilings or surface mounting
  • Downlights and spotlights: Recessed lights for a clean ceiling look
  • Strip lights: For cove lighting, under-cabinet and decorative use
  • Decorative and outdoor lights: Pendants, wall lights, gate lights

Money-Saving Tips

  1. Replace old tube lights and CFLs with LED battens and bulbs.
  2. Choose efficient models with more lumens per watt.
  3. Use separate switches for general and accent lighting so you only use what you need.
  4. Buy from a trusted brand for longer life and warranty support.
  5. Keep the bill, since many LED products come with a warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Colour Temperature: Warm, Neutral or Cool?
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and describes how warm or cool the light looks.
How Much Light Does a Room Need?
A rough guide for Indian homes:
What is better for home: warm white or cool white?
Use both. Warm white for bedrooms and living areas, cool or neutral white for the kitchen, bathroom and study.
How many watts LED bulb do I need for a bedroom?
It depends on room size and lumens. For a typical bedroom, a total of about 1,500 to 2,500 lumens across the lights works well, which is often 2 to 3 LED downlights.
Do LED lights save electricity?
Yes. LEDs use far less electricity than incandescent bulbs and CFLs for the same brightness, and they last much longer.
Can I change my tube light to an LED batten myself?
It usually needs basic wiring. For safety, ask an electrician to do it.
